Following the introduction of the new specialist examination system in 2004, it became clear that the area of oral surgery, formerly representing a single profession, would develop into two distinct disciplines. Dentoalveolar surgery, which requires a dentist’s diploma, on the one hand, and maxillofacial surgery, which requires a physician’s diploma, on the other hand. As a result of the above development, the Department of Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery was established in 2008 at the University of Szeged, as part of the Faculty of Human Medicine, under superb management and professional guidance, and outstanding infrastructural circumstances.
The Outpatient Department of Dentoalveolar Surgery, and the Units of Oral Medicine and Prosthetic Rehabilitation continue to work in the building of the Faculty of Dentistry. In addition, a further outpatient facility will be dedicated to the care of injured and disabled children and adults.
In line with the health care integration measures of 2008, all cases of oral surgery in the city will be referred to the Special Outpatient Department of Oral Surgery of the Faculty of Dentistry, which will extend specialized service to the patients of the region from morning to evening, as a continuous 12-hour service.
In addition to patient care, a major task of the Department is related to university level education, with courses delivered by our staff of well-prepared instructors in Hungarian and English for as many as 6 years.
We are glad to inform you that an increasing number of young instructors of the Department are involved in research activities, which they wish to use in the course of their career building leading to a degree.
In addition to teaching, the department staff is also active in medical specialist training: at present, a total of 14 post-graduate students are preparing for their specialist examination. Continuous further training, participation in national and foreign conferences also add to the fame of oral surgery in Szeged.
